Alumni Spotlight on Melissa Ness: My journey from ALT student to Live Event Manager

Melissa Ness, who first discovered her passion for logistics during her studies at ALT, now leads the Live Events Department at TRUCKINGBY. In her current role as Live Event Manager, she oversees the complex logistics of world tours, including managing the moving parts for NE-YO’s 2024 global tour.

We caught up with Melissa to discuss her experience of studying Live Events Production at ALT and get insights into her journey from graduate to Live Event Manager.

Why did you decide to study at the Academy of Live Technology?

After finishing college, where I studied Stage Management and Technical Theatre, I knew I wanted to broaden my knowledge of events and dive deeper into the world of live events and the music industry. I came across ALT online, and it instantly felt like the perfect fit for me. The course offered exactly what I was looking for, and I knew it was the ideal place to take my passion to the next level.

What was the best thing about the Live Events Production course?

The best part of my course was undoubtedly the work experience and the opportunities ALT provided. It opened countless doors for me and allowed me to connect with so many industry professionals. The hands-on experience I gained was invaluable, and it played a huge role in shaping my career.

How did your course prepare you for working in industry?

The course was incredibly well-rounded, offering a wide range of modules that allowed me to explore every aspect of the events industry— from lighting, sound, and animation to artist liaison, stage management, event planning, logistics, and more. This diverse curriculum gave me hands-on experience in many areas, while also providing invaluable networking opportunities with people from all corners of the industry. It was the perfect way to build a strong foundation and make connections that have supported me in my career.

How would you sum up your time studying at the Academy of Live Technology?

My time at ALT was truly unique and nothing like a traditional university experience. It gave me an authentic, hands-on insight into the Live Event industry and provided the foundation I needed to build a successful career. ALT didn’t just prepare me for a job—it set me up for life.

What advice would you give for anyone wanting to study at the Academy of Live Technology?

My advice for anyone thinking about studying at ALT is to dive in and give it everything you’ve got! ALT offers incredible opportunities that can help you carve your path in the industry, so make sure to embrace every one of them. Work hard, stay dedicated, and you’ll connect with people who can truly impact your career. Don’t let any work experience pass you by—it could be the key to something that changes your life.

Since leaving, you've become Live Event Manager for TRUCKINGBY, how did you get into this role?

Since graduating, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to grow with TRUCKINGBY, and now I’m the Live Event Manager. My journey began back during my time at ALT when I was introduced to TRUCKINGBY through a Logistics Module in my second year. After finishing my studies, I spent some time in Tour Catering, but when the pandemic hit, things shifted. In 2022, TRUCKINGBY reached out and brought me on as a Live Event Coordinator. In just under three years, I’ve gone from that role to becoming a shareholder in the company and now managing the Live Events Department. It’s been an amazing and rewarding path, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.

What does a typical working day look like for you?

My role involves a range of responsibilities, from planning routes for tours of all sizes to collaborating with Tour Managers on tour logistics—everything from the number of trucks required to the routing across the UK and EU. I’m also involved in truck planning for corporate events, like the logistical coordination for the TPI Awards. Networking with clients is another key part of my job, as I work to expand our reach, grow our client base, and ensure TRUCKINGBY’s name is recognised by as many people as possible. No two days are the same, but each one is filled with exciting challenges and opportunities!

What's your favourite thing about your job?

It’s definitely the networking and tour planning! I take immense pride in working closely with our clients to bring their tours to life. There's something incredibly fulfilling about seeing everything come together. I love visiting the sites while a tour is on the road, stepping back, and knowing I played a key role in making it happen. After all, no trucks means no show!

What is your most memorable moment?

My most memorable moment came when I was entrusted with the responsibility of planning the logistical plan for NE-YO's 2024 tour. It was a nerve-wracking experience, as it was my first time taking full control, but it also filled me with immense pride to see how far I had come. The entire process was a challenge, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it was an incredible opportunity to prove to myself just how much I had learned and grown in my career.

You now come back to Production Park with TRUCKINGBY. What's it like working with Production Park in industry?

Returning to Production Park as part of my job feels incredibly special. It’s always a proud moment for me to come back to where it all began. Catching up with my course lecturers and sharing what I’ve been up to, while seeing their pride in my journey, is such a rewarding experience. Watching Production Park evolve from its humble beginnings into the thriving hub it is now is nothing short of remarkable. I absolutely love coming back to run masterclasses for ALT in Live Event Logistics, where I get to witness the next generation of professionals growing and thriving in this incredible industry. It feels like full circle—years ago, I was taught by TRUCKINGBY, and now I have the honor of being the one teaching them! Every time I leave Production Park, I do so with a heart full of happiness and pride.
